Jellicol® - one brand, a complete collagen peptide platform

Today, collagen is much more than a raw material source and a single number describing its average molecular weight. For manufacturers of food, supplements, nutraceuticals and functional products, what increasingly matters is consistent parameters, control of the production process, the peptide profile and how well the ingredient fits a specific application.

This is the idea behind Jellicol® – Jellice’s platform of standardised collagen peptides. Its aim is a coherent system that treats collagen not as a single ingredient but as a family of precisely defined solutions.

One brand. A complete collagen platform.

Jellicol® is an umbrella brand for standardised solutions based on collagen peptides. It combines controlled production, defined molecular weight profiles, consistent quality and application-specific solutions.

This matters because not every final product needs exactly the same kind of collagen peptides.

A nutritional product may have different requirements from a functional beverage, and both differ from an advanced nutraceutical. So the key question is not only “which collagen should I choose?” but above all “which peptide profile is right for this application?”

From native collagen to a controlled peptide profile

The process starts with native collagen – a protein with a high molecular weight and a natural structure. Controlled hydrolysis then breaks it down into peptides of different lengths and molecular weights.

It is control of hydrolysis that makes it possible to achieve a defined peptide distribution.

With Jellicol®, the goal is therefore not simply a collagen hydrolysate but greater control over the peptide profile we end up with.

Two products can have a similar average molecular weight and still differ in peptide distribution and functional characteristics.

Average molecular weight is only the beginning

Average molecular weight is an important parameter because it affects the characteristics of the peptides and their absorption. However, it should not be treated as the only indicator of an ingredient’s quality or properties.

In practice, the following also matter:

  • the molecular weight distribution,
  • the width of that distribution,
  • the consistency of the peptide profile,
  • the characteristics of the peptides and bioactive sequences,
  • the analytical methods used,
  • quality control and batch-to-batch consistency.

It is the peptide profile that helps explain the differences between individual hydrolysates.

The Jellicol® portfolio – a solution matched to the application

A good example of the Jellicol® approach is its portfolio of collagen peptides from marine and freshwater fish, including pangasius and tilapia.

Within this platform, individual grades have been designed with different market needs in mind.

Jellicol® MN – Nutritional

Jellicol® MN was developed for nutritional applications. It has an average molecular weight of around 4000 Da.

It can be used in protein-enriched products, beverages, shakes, nutritional products and other formulations where the nutritional value of the ingredient matters.

Jellicol® MF – Functional

Jellicol® MF is designed for functional applications, with an average molecular weight of around 2000 Da.

Its profile is designed for applications that require good solubility and functionality – in both liquid and powder formulations. It is used, among others, in beverages, sticks, sachets and functional products.

Jellicol® MFH – Functional + Handling

Jellicol® MFH also has an average molecular weight of around 2000 Da, but in addition offers a coarser particle size.

This difference matters above all for the production process. A coarser particle size can make the raw material easier to handle, reduce dusting and improve flowability.

MFH is therefore intended for manufacturers who need to combine ingredient functionality with properties that make processing and handling easier in larger-scale production.

Jellicol® MA – Advanced Absorption

The newest element of this line-up is Jellicol® MA – Advanced Absorption.

It is a premium grade with a low average molecular weight – around 1000 Da – and a more tightly controlled molecular weight profile.

MA is designed for advanced nutraceutical applications where efficient peptide absorption and high ingredient consistency are important.

A low molecular weight alone is not the only indicator of bioactivity. The peptide composition and biological properties of the ingredient matter too.

Why does standardisation matter for business?

For a manufacturer, a good ingredient is not just one that meets a given specification. Being able to maintain those parameters from batch to batch is just as important.

That is why Jellicol® is built on controlled hydrolysis, defined specifications, validated analytical methods and batch-to-batch consistency control.

Traceability matters too. For brand owners and manufacturers this means greater transparency when choosing a raw material and a clearer picture of what lies behind the quality of the ingredient they use.

One platform, many possibilities

Jellicol® brings order to how we think about collagen peptides. Instead of reducing the choice to the collagen source and average molecular weight, the platform takes into account the peptide profile, physical properties, technological requirements and the intended application.

From Jellicol® MN – Nutritional, through MF and MFH – Functional, to MA – Advanced Absorption – each grade meets different manufacturer needs.

This approach can be summed up very simply:

not one collagen for everyone, but the right peptide profile for the right product.

And that is the idea behind Jellicol®: a more transparent approach to collagen, a broader platform of standardised solutions and greater precision in choosing an ingredient.
