Lactoferrin

Lactoferrin
from New Zealand

A bioactive protein of natural origin

Lactoferrin is a natural glycoprotein of the transferrin family, known for its ability to bind iron. It is a valued bioactive ingredient because of its antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal and immunomodulatory properties.

Our lactoferrin is produced by the Tatua Co-operative Dairy Company in New Zealand. Tatua makes it in two purity grades: 90% and 95%. Both are freeze-dried and made exclusively from fresh New Zealand milk, which preserves the native structure of the protein and its functional properties.

Lactoferrin quality starts with the milk

Tatua lactoferrin is made from milk collected from a small, tightly controlled group of New Zealand dairy farms located right next to the production site in the Waikato region. The farms lie within just 12 km of the Tatua plant, which allows efficient control of the raw material and traceability from the very first stages of the supply chain.

Close cooperation with local farms helps maintain consistent raw material quality and reproducible production, which is especially important for speciality ingredients intended for demanding nutritional applications.

Grass-Fed – milk from New Zealand pastures

The origin of the milk is one of the key features of Tatua lactoferrin. The manufacturer operates a certified Grass-Fed system in line with the New Zealand Dairy Grass-Fed Administrative Standard. Under the standard, grass makes up at least 90% of the cows’ diet and the animals spend at least 340 days a year on pasture.

Quality control at every stage

The quality and safety of the lactoferrin are backed by a comprehensive control system covering the entire production process – from milk collection, through processing and testing, to the release of the finished batch.

The plant operates to FSSC 22000 and HACCP standards, and the manufacturer also has an ISO 17025 laboratory and Halal and Kosher certification. The quality system also covers raw material traceability and batch-to-batch consistency control.

Four areas of documented activity

Lactoferrin is a high-purity dairy ingredient used, among others, in infant and young child nutrition, as well as in products that support immune function and the nutritional value of specialised formulations.

Growth
  • infants need lactoferrin for normal development of the digestive tract: it drives the differentiation of small intestine epithelial cells
  • supports iron absorption and brush border development, promoting healthy fetal gut development
  • in the human fetus it acts as a regulator of bone growth in the early stages of development
  • promotes cartilage growth by stimulating immature osteocytes and osteoblasts
Protection
  • can inhibit viral entry into host cells and increase the phagocytic activity of macrophages
  • sequesters iron, making it harder for bacteria to absorb and inhibiting their growth
  • blocks bacterial carbohydrate metabolism and destabilises bacterial cell walls
  • has a broad spectrum of antifungal activity against yeasts and moulds
Nourishment
  • a well-known anti-inflammatory ingredient: it inhibits inflammatory reactions by calibrating the type of immune response induced (Th1 vs. Th2)
  • lactoferrin in amniotic fluid reduces fetal inflammation and the incidence of infection
  • iron sequestration reduces oxidative stress, preventing cell damage
Regeneration
  • faecal lactoferrin is used as a diagnostic marker of inflammatory bowel disease
  • lactoferrin supplementation helps maintain bone mass and microarchitecture, improving bone density and strength
  • supports granulation and skin epithelialisation, aiding soft tissue wound healing
